ASEAN Secretariat, 12 July – The ASEAN Secretariat and the Japan Foundation will jointly sponsor a textile forum on 15 July 2002 and a textile exhibition from 15 to 20 July 2002 at the ASEAN Secretariat building in South Jakarta. Aside from the textile collectors, potential collectors, makers, designers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students, the event is open to the public to learn and appreciate the indigenous textile.
The forum will discuss textile collection management issues such as collection research, preservation, development and promotion for independent, corporate and co-operative collectors. The forum intends to share information among textile collectors, makers, designers, researchers and managers from Indonesia and the region.
Well-known textile designers are expected to participate in these events, such as Iwan Tirta, Josephine Komara (Obin), and Carmenita. Representatives from UNESCO Asia Pacific, Dr.Richard Engelhardt, and Prof. Teruo Sekimoto of Tokyo University are also expected.
Other participants include Wastraprema (Textile Lovers of Indonesia), Thailand-based AHPADA (ASEAN Heritage Promotion and Development Association), Prof. Paothong Thongchua from Thammasart University, Ibu Pia Alisjahbana of Femina Group, and Ibu Eiko Kusuma.
The forum will provide an opportunity to view the rare Nusantara textile collection of Ibu Eiko Kusuma which will be on display from 15 -20 July 2002. ASEAN Textile Forum will also feature exhibition of textile from other collectors, new invention of batik in Malaysia, and textile in Thailand as well as and books on textiles.
The event is part of ASEAN’s 35th Anniversary activities.
ASEAN comprises Brunei Darusssalam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
