JAKARTA - To mark the historic establishment of the ASEAN Free Trade Area, the ASEAN Secretariat is organizing a symposium on 31 January 2002 at the Grand Hyatt in Jakarta. 

          This important achievement in ASEAN economic cooperation is a major step toward turning the ASEAN region into an integrated production base and a market of 500 million people.   

AFTA is expected to boost the current efforts of ASEAN to integrate the economies of the ten Southeast Asian nations with a view to sustaining the region�s economic competitiveness.
