The Special Meeting Of The ASEAN Foreign Ministers On The Progress And Developments Of ASEAN Pacific Cooperation

- The ASEAN Foreign Ministers met in their special session from 11 - 12 February 1985 in Bangkok. The meeting was attended by His Excellency Pengiran Bahrin, Minister for Law cum Ministers for Communications of Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Prof. Dr. Mochtar Kusumaatmadja, Minister for Foreign Affair 5 of Indonesia, His Excellency Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, His' Excellency Mr. Arturo Tolentino Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, His Excellency Mr. S. Dhanabalan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore and His Excellency Air Chief Marshal Siddhi Savetsila, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand together with their respective delegates. His Excellency Mr. Phan Wannamethee, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat was also present.
- The Foreign Ministers reviewed the latest developments along the Thai-Kampuchean border and issued a joint statement on 11 February 1985.
- The Foreign Ministers noted with satisfaction the progress made in ASEAN-Pacific cooperation since its initiation at the last Post Ministerial Conference of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Jakarta in July 1984. The Foreign Ministers noted in particular, the result of the Meeting of Senior Officials of ASEAN and its five dialogue partners of the Pacific namely Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States which took place in Jakarta on 28 - 29 January 1985 .
- The Foreign Ministers agreed with the direction taken by the Senior Officials of the eleven countries that ASEAN and its five dialogue partners should embark upon a new approach on human resources development which will supplement and complement existing programmes at the bilateral and regional levels and leave open for participation of other Pacific countries, particularly the developing countries of the Pacific, at the project level.
- The Foreign Ministers were of the view that since recent developments in the Pacific region had shown a promising future, the time was opportune for the countries concerned to tap the great potentials in natural and human resources that the region possesses. They were satisfied that the first step in the right direction had been taker, and expressed the hope that the programme would evolve to respond to the need-and the challenge of the future with a view to bringing about mutual benefit not only to the countries concerned but to the world as a whole.
- The Foreign Ministers were informed of the commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Asia - Africa Conference scheduled to be held on 24 - 25 April 1985 in Bandung. They welcomed such an occasion and looked forward to attending- it as it would provide an opportunity for countries in Asia and Africa to reflect their aspirations as a contribution to meet the current international situation and implement cooperation among developing countries.
