- On 29-30 October 1987, Indonesia hosted the Third ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME), in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Emil Salim, the Minister of State for Population and the Environment of the Republic of Indonesia.
- The Meeting was attended by H.E. Dato Paduka Hj. Selamat Hj. Munap, Deputy Minister of Development of Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Mr. Emil Salim, the Minister of State for Population and the Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Datuk Amar Stephen K.T. Yong, the Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment of Malaysia, H.E. Mr. Fulgencio S. Factoran, Jr., the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Republic of the Philippines, H.E. Dr. Ahmad Mattar, the Minister for the Environment of the Republic of Singapore, and H.E. Mr. Banyat Bantadtan, the Minister of Science, Technology and Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand. Dr. Filemon A. Uriarte, Jr., Director, Bureau of Science and Technology and Officer-in- Charge of the ASEAN Secretariat, attended on behalf of the Secretary-General.
- The Third AMME was preceded by an ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on the Environment on 27 - 28 October 1987 to prepare for the Meeting of the Environment Ministers.
- Among the major decision of the Third AMME were the adoption of the ASEAN Environment Programme III (ASEP III: 1988 - 1992) and the Jakarta Resolution on Sustainable Development.
- ASEP III sets the goals, objectives, programmes and activities for ASEAN cooperation in the field of the environment for the next five years.
- The Jakarta Resolution emphasizes the need to strengthen ASEAN regional cooperation on all matters relating to the environment. It stresses that efforts be aimed at common resources and issues that affect the common well-being of the peoples of ASEAN. Furthermore, ASEAN cooperation should encompass governments and government agencies as well as the private business sector, professional associations, educational and academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. It was also resolved to facilitate the incorporation of environmental considerations into the programmes and activities of the ASEAN committees and to strengthen the existing institutional arrangements for regional cooperation.
- The delegations from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand expressed their sincere appreciation to the government and people of Indonesia for the warm hospitality accorded them and the excellent arrangements made for the Meeting. The Meeting was held in the traditional spirit of ASEAN solidarity and cordiality.
