The Sixth Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Environmental Economics (AWGEE) was held on 16-17 April 1996 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting was chaired by Malaysia for the second time and was attended by delegates from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The objectives of the meeting were to review the work of the group and to take stock of the progress so as to chart the path ahead to enable the achievement of the desired outputs.

The Working Group agreed to maintain and conduct collaborative research projects in the following two areas namely:

1. Environmental and Natural Resource Accounting (ENRA); and
   

2. Economic Instruments for Pollution Prevention.

Funding for the proposed Project on Environmental and Natural Resource Accounting Manual for the ASEAN Countries and Economic Instruments for Pollution Prevention is now available with the support of the Canadian Government through the Economic and Environment Programme for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA).

The topics of discussions at the Sixth AWGEE Meeting were:

1. the progress report of each member country on recent development in the area of environmental economics;
   

2. the status of the project on Environmental and Natural Resource Accounting Project (Malaysia) and the market Based Instruments Project (Thailand);
   

3. promotion of environmental management through the implementation of ISO 14000; and
   

4. the Possibility of exploring areas for cooperation and collaboration between US-AEP and ASEAN in the field of Environmental Economics

The meeting also reviewed the work plan for 1996/1997 and agreed to undertake the following activities:

1. A manual on Environmental and Natural Resources Accounting ;
   

2. Adaptability of Economic Instruments for pollution control in ASEAN Member Countries ;
   

3. An inventory of Research Projects and Publications in Environmental Economics in ASEAN Member Countries ;
   

4. Promotion of ISO 14000 in small and medium industries (SMI)
