Joint Press Release The 2nd ASEAN-ECO Foreign Ministers Meeting, New York, USA

The Second Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Economic Co-operation Organisation (ECO) was held in New York on 1 October 1996. It was attended by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Professor S. Jayakumar, the Foreign Minister of Iran, Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati, the Foreign Minister of Kazakstan, mr. Kasymzhomart Tokayev, the Foreign Minister of Kyrgyz Republic, Mrs Roza Otunbayeva, the Secretary-General of ECO, Mr. Onder Ozar, and representatives from both ASEAN and ECO member states.
It was agreed that the two Secretaries-General would take necessary steps to work out a programme for an exchange of visits of senior officials of ASEAN and ECO member countries to familiarise themselves with each other's countries. To complement these governmental contacts, the two Secretaries-General could also work out a programme of exchange of visits between the representatives of the private sectors of ASEAN and ECO countries. It was further agreed that the two Secretaries-General would work out specific and practical proposals regarding the modalities of cooperation in the identified areas of transport, communications, trade and investment, energy, human resources development and narcotics control. They should also explore the possibilities of having an institutional cooperative relationship between the two organisations with the prior approval of their respective policy-making organs.
It was decided that the Secretaries-General of ASEAN and ECO will submit the results of these efforts to the next annual meeting of the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and ECO countries on the occasion of the 52nd session of the UN General Assembly in 1997.
