Press Release of the 4th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Transboundary Pollution
Singapore, 2-4 February 1994

The Fourth Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Transboundary Pollution (WGTP) was held on 2 - 4 February 1994 in Singapore. The meeting was chaired by Singapore. Delegates from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand attended the meeting. The objective of the meeting was to discuss environmental issues related to transboundary pollution of concern to ASEAN countries.

ASEAN COUNTRIES' ACHIEVEMENTS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION CONTROL

2. The WGTP will produce a publication on ASEAN countries' achievements and future directions in environmental pollution control. The publication would describe ASEAN countries' commitment and collaborative efforts in protecting the environment.

PROCEDURE TO CONTROL TRANSBOUNDARY MOVEMENT OF HAZARDOUS WASTES BETWEEN ASEAN COUNTRIES

3. The WGTP agreed to develop a procedure to control the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes between ASEAN countries. The procedure would be based on the principles of the Basel Convention which require waste exporters to obtain prior consent from the relevant authority of the importing country, before the movement of hazardous wastes is allowed.

FRAME WORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

4. All ASEAN countries supported the basic principles of the Framework Convention on Climate Change and agreed to work closely together and share their expertise and experience in areas involving climate change. The WGTP will work towards a concerted ASEAN effort in developing strategies and programmes to mitigate problems caused by climate change.
