Attaining The ISO 9002

BRUNEI

Two local contracting firms for Civil Engineering Works have been awarded ISO 9002 certification on 28 March 1996. The ceremony was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Development. The Minister in his speech stated :

"Quality is no longer the preserve on
inspectors in whilte coats but rather quality
has entered the boardroom as a central
management concern. Maintaining and
improving quality requires a permanently
learning Organisation and / believe quality
must be the daily standard in all our
endeavours. This would mean knowing
one's customer and his requirements,
knowing one's own key capabilities and
being able to combine the two in order to
compete for business.

The certification of the quality system
constitutes, for companies, particularly
small and medium scale enterprises, an
important way of proving that they are able
to fulfill the requirements of ISO 9000, and
thus becomes important for their growth.
The process of certification, nevertheless,
should not be regarded as an end in itself,
rather it should be regarded as an excellent
instrument for guaranteeing and improving
quality. In broader and more important
aspect, certification to ISO 9000 should be
regarded as a major step for construction
companies to compete successfully in the
region ".

To date five local firms have been awarded ISO 9001 certifications and eleven companies awarded ISO 9002.
