Joint Press Release 11th Meeting Of The ASEAN Ministers On Agriculture And Forestry
Singapore, 9-11 November 1989 |
- The Eleventh Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry was held in Singapore on 9-11 November 1989 preceded by a Senior Officials Meeting held on 6-8 November 1989.
- The Meeting was attended by H.E. Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Rahman bin Dato Hj Taib, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam; H.E. Mr. Wardojo, Minister of Agriculture and H.E. Mr. Hasjrul Harahap, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia; H.E. Datuk Seri Sanusi bin Junid, Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia; H.E. Mr. Carlos G. Dominguez, Secretary of Agriculture of the Philippines; H.E. Mr. Udorn Tantisunthorn, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand; and H.E. Mr. S. Dhanabalan, Minister for National Development and H.E. Dr. Lee Boon Yang, Senior Minister of State for National Development and Home Affairs of the Republic of Singapore and their respective delegates. H.E. Mr. Rusli Noor, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat and members of his staff were also in attendance.
- The Ministers, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat and Leaders of the Senior Officials Meeting made a courtesy call on H .E. President Wee Kim Wee of the Republic of Singapore at the Istana on 9 November 1989.
- H.E. Mr. S. Dhanabalan, Minister for National Development, Singapore and H.E. Mr. Carlos G. Dominguez, Secretary of Agriculture of the Philippines were unanimously elected as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Meeting respectively.
- The Ministers reviewed the progress of the various projects and activities undertaken by the ASEAN Committee on Food, Agriculture and Forestry (COFAF) and its subsidiary bodies in the fields of fisheries, livestock, crops, forestry and food handling including the ASEAN Food Security Reserve. The Ministers were satisfied with the progress of the various projects and activities.
- The Ministers expressed concern over the Anti-Tropical Timber Campaign conducted in some developed countries. While exploitation of tropical rainforests can affect the environment, the Meeting was of the view that industrial activities in the developed countries were largely responsible for environmental degradation. The Ministers noted there have been significant ASEAN efforts on forest management, conservation and development. Information on .these efforts should be disseminated so that there is better appreciation of the ASEAN forestry industry by the international community.
- A new direction was taken to involve the private sector in ASEAN development projects so that project findings could be translated into viable and profitable commercial enterprises. In this regard, the Ministers were pleased with the establishment of the ASEAN Fisheries Federation which was a step towards achieving greater private sector participation within the framework of COFAF.
- The 12th AMAF Meeting will be held in the Philippines in late 1990.
- The delegations of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand expressed their sincere appreciation and thanks to the Government and people of Singapore for the warm hospitality accorded them and for the excellent arrangements made for the Meeting.
- The Meeting was held in the traditional spirit of ASEAN solidarity and cordiality.
