The ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue was last held in Manila on 26-27 March 1981.
On the whole, progress in the area of trade has been slow and limited. The New Zealand response has been primarily on assistance to trade promotion.
In development cooperation, New Zealand is assisting ASEAN in projects on animal husbandry, the reforestation and pine forest development and end uses of timber. This program which was supposed to have expired in 1981 has been extended. Progress of these projects are satisfactorily going on. There is also an ASEAN-New Zealand Fellowship Program at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore.
At the last Dialogue, ASEAN had requested support for five new projects in the areas of Ferrocement technology, Geothermal energy, small dimension Logs, a Regional Seed technology center and Regional Dairy Training Center.
Recently, New Zealand proposed to send a
technical mission around the ASEAN countries to
assess how New Zealand might best help out in the
fields of energy inventory assessment, geothermal
energy, micro-hydro generation, use of energy
from waste and electrical circulation. ASEAN had
welcomed the visit.
