ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretariat also received a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in June and July 1981. ECOWAS is composed of the countries of Benin, Cape-Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo and Upper Volta. The ECOWAS delegation visited ASEAN to examine the possibility of initiating economic cooperation between the two regions.
The South Pacific Forum, through by the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Cooperation (SPEC) has made known its interest of expanding its cooperation with ASEAN. Relations between the two regions are currently maintained at the Secretariat level.
