The Eighth ASEAN - Australia Forum was held in Canberra in January 1984. It reviewed developments in ASEAN - Australia relations.
Australia announced an additional commitment of A$ 30.36 million to the ASEAN - Australia Economic Cooperation Programme (AAECP) making the total contribution to A$ 86.7 million since the commencement of the programme in 1974.
The ASEAN - Australia Joint Research Project will be completed before the end of 1984 and both, sides have expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project.
The ASEAN Protein Project was completed in mid-1984 and Australia has agreed to assist ASEAN in a new ASEAN Food Habits Project after the completion of the Protein Project.
The ASEAN Food Waste Materials Project was completed. The objective of this project had been achieved. The project was extended for another period of five years from April 1983 to. cover new areas of activities.
The ASEAN Development Education Programme (ADEP) had also been completed and the Eighth Forum agreed to a two-year extension using the savings for additional activities.
Australia made further commitment for the Energy Cooperation Programme (A$ 1 million), the Food Handling Project (A$ 450,000) and the Population Programmes (A$ 6 million).
Australia's assistance was also extended to the ASEAN Diabetes Prevention and Control Project.
Australia also agreed to assist under the ASEAN Special Visit Scheme (ASVS) the following two projects:
b) Seminar-Cum-Study Tour on Management and Legal Aid Service.
