ASEAN - European Community


The Fourth Meeting of the ASEAN - EC Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) was held in Brussels in October 1983.

In the commercial field, both sides agreed that protectionist measures should be resisted. They also agreed that cooperation in the field of commodities should be continued, particularly in the effective operation of existing international commodity agreements and in the negotiations of new agreements in the context of the Integrated Programme for Commodities (IPC). EC also reiterated its support for an early implementation of the Common Fund and noted ASEAN's call for the extension of its STABEX scheme for ASEAN.

ASEAN also requested EC to take necessary measures to facilitate the easy access of ASEAN products to EC markets.

Two EEC - GSP Seminars were held in Manila and Kuala Lumpur in April 1984.

On trade promotion, four projects were implemented. An additional 5 projects were approved for implementation.

The inaugural meeting of the ASEAN-EC Business Council was held in Jakarta in December 1983, paving the way for closer cooperation between the private sector of the two regions.

To promote European investment in ASEAN countries, three investment seminars were held in London, Paris and Bonn in April 1984.

A Seminar on Access to EC Capital Markets was held in London in March 1984 for ASEAN participants.

Phase I of the Cooperation Programme in Science and Technology was reviewed at the 4th JCC Meeting. The progress was found to be generally satisfactory. Phase II will concentrate on three areas: training, development of R & D activities, and an ASEAN Science and Technology Week.

The Second ASEAN - EEC Teacher Trainer Programme was held in Fontainbleu, France, in January/February 1984.
