The Thirteenth Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Transportation and Communications (COTAC) was held in Malaysia in April 1984.
Shipping and Ports
The Seventh Meeting of the ASEAN Sub- Committee on Shipping and Ports was held in April 1984 in Singapore to review the progress of projects under the Integrated Work Programme on Shipping (IWPS). The Meeting endorsed the following new projects:
ii) Planning, Management and Operations of Dry Bulk Handling Terminal; and
iii) IMO Assistance on Port Operations
The Seventh Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Land Transportation was held in March 1984 in Indonesia to review progress of projects under the ASEAN. Integrated Work Programme on Land Transportation (IWPLT).
With regard to the Study on Inland Waterways and Ferry Links Development, the study on the Singapore-Tanjung Pinang Link had been completed in October 1983. While the study on the Penang-Belawan and Phuket-Penang Links was expected to be finalized by the end of 1984. The study on the Malacca-Dumai, Zamboanga- Labuan and/or Sandakan/Singapore and Davao- Menado had been initiated.
Civil Aviation
The Sixth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Civil Aviation and Related Services was held in August 1983 in Singapore to discuss the progress of the ASEAN Integrated Work Programme on Civil Aviation & Related Services (IWPCARS) and the Lufthansa protectionist policy which adversely affected ASEAN Airlines' interest.
The Sixteenth Economic Ministers Meeting expressed concern over the unilateral fare reduction on the West Germany - Hongkong sector by Lufthansa/Cathay Pacific that would severely affect ASEAN stopovers. The Meeting expressed hope that the prolonged issue would be resolved soon.
Post and Telecommunications
The Seventh Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Post and Telecommunications was held in August 1983 in Kuala Lumpur to review the Integrated Work Programme on Post and Telecommunications.
The Meeting decided to establish a Frequency Coordination Committee to coordinate the use of radio frequencies at the border areas.
