COOPERATION IN CULTURE AND INFORMATION (COCI)



The Twenty Third Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) was held in Bandar Seri Begawan on 10-13 December 1990. The Meeting marked the end of Brunei Darussalam’s three-year chairmanship of the Committee and the beginning for Indonesia's. The Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan among others outlined the tentative budget requests for projects. A sum of US$2,153,457.00 was recommended by the Meeting to finance 24 projects. However, at the 24th ASEAN-COCI Meeting held in Prigen, East Java, Indonesia from 20 May to 1 June 1991, the budget re- quested was proposed for an allocation of US$2,445,826 to finance 25 projects.


Some of the highlights of the ASEAN COCI Projects

2 During the year under review, ASEAN COCI successfully implemented a number of projects. In the field of Literary and ASEAN Studies, ASEAN COCI completed another publication of Children Book's and Sources Materials on ASEAN Culture. The latest publication entitled "My Family" were printed in 7,500 copies and each member country received one thousand copies. The Sixth Intra-ASEAN Archaeological Excavation and Conservation was completed in Bandar Seri Begawan with recommendation for extension for a second cycle. Also successfully completed was the Exchange of ASEAN Librarians.

3 In the Performing Arts, the Second ASEAN Theatre Festival was held in Singapore. The Festival was attended by 20 participants from each ASEAN countries. The week-long Festival involved both performances and workshop discussions by member countries.

4 In the field of Radio and Television, ASEAN COCI successfully implemented the Fifth ASEAN Festival of Songs in the Indonesian city of Surabaya from 4-12 October 1990. In conjunction with the Festival, an ASEAN song writers/composers Workshop was convened. The Festival culminated in a Gala Performance telecast live over TVRI and RRI (Government Television and Radio Network).

5 In the field of Films and Video, ASEAN COCI in its effort to portray the agricultural aspects in ASEAN successfully produced a 30- minute documentary Film on Agriculture.

6 In Print Media, two projects were implemented in September 1990 for ASEAN journalists. The first was the Fourth Workshop Seminar for Journalists of ASEAN News Agencies and Related News Organization which was held in Kuala Lumpur. Some 14 journalists took part in the 12-day workshop seminar. The other project was the Fourth ASEAN Exchange of Journalists Programme in which about thirty journalists journeyed through the six ASEAN capitals to learn more about ASEAN through interaction. While in Jakarta, they also visited the ASEAN Secretariat.

7 In Interpersonal Media, one of the important projects of ASEAN COCI, the Second ASEAN Awards Ceremony for Culture, Communication and Literary Work, was implemented in Singapore, on November the 8th, 1990. The ASEAN Awards was introduced in 1987 to give recognition to artists and media professionals of ASEAN who have excelled in the arts and communications. It was agreed by ASEAN COCI that member countries take turn to host a presentation ceremony every three years.


ASEAN COCI Projects for FY 1991/1992

8 At its 24th Meeting in, the COCI agreed to submit 25 projects with a budget requirement of more than US$2,445,826.00 for Financial Year 1991/1992 for the ASEAN Standing Committee's approval. It would be submitted to the ASEAN Standing Committee for approval.
