Promoting awareness of ASEAN, particularly to people in the grassroots, has been a major concern of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information for several years. One of COCI's most effective vehicles to do this is the ASEAN in Action project, a weekly 15-30 minute radio programme aired on prime time over the national radio networks of member countries.
Now in its fourth year of implementation, the project covers all nine member countries of ASEAN. Some radio networks have also included the programme in their overseas radio broadcast services.
The approach, language and content of the programmes vary as the producers are given the flexibility to determine their own programme format which may be in the form of a magazine, documentary, interview, or "infotainment", news clips or a combination of these. Most radio programmes, however, have included an "ASEAN quiz" segment with token prizes for winners to sustain the growing interest and listenership in the programme.
The effectiveness of the programme depends to a large extent on the creativity and initiative of each country's producer. But to make the radio programme more eff ective, suitable news and information materials are needed from ASEAN project coordinators, the better to inform the grassroots about ASEAN.
